20 Crazy Diet Fads We Can’t Believe Caught On
The Grapefruit Diet, or the “Hollywood plan,” caught on in the 1930s among stars looking to get slim fast for the cameras. It involved eating only 800 to 1,000 calories a day (an adult woman needs at least 1,200) for 10 days. Of course, every meal contained grapefruit: half a grapefruit with two slices of bacon and two boiled or scrambled eggs for breakfast, half a grapefruit with any meat and a salad for lunch, and half a grapefruit with meat or fish and buttered vegetables for dinner. A “bedtime snack” of a glass of either low-fat milk or tomato juice was also permitted, lest you felt like passing out after a day filled predominantly with citrus. Getty Images
