If pedicures, pumice stones and foot cream aren’t treating your cracked and calloused heels, look to a foot peel. Unlike typical pedicures, peels don’t rely on physical exfoliation or harsh tools. Instead, they use a combination of salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acids, which act as exfoliating agents. These acids are typically contained in a gel inside a single use plastic bootie and penetrate different layers of skin to gently remove calluses and dead skin over the course of one to three weeks.
To use a peel, first soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes. Then slip on the booties and relax for about an hour while the exfoliating gel does the work. You won’t notice a difference right away, but don’t worry! Your feet will begin to peel as the acid sinks into your skin’s layers. Some peels take a few days to work, while others can take a few weeks. You can soak your feet daily to encourage faster exfoliation time and reduce flaking.
Salicylic acid makes for a great chemical exfoliating agent—but so does papain, or papaya enzymes. Enzyme exfoliants are gentler than AHAs, but still lead to a smoother, flake-free surface by breaking down the proteins that hold dead skin together.
If you are really into foot peels, and you know you will want to do it again once the month-long cycle is complete, look for peeling packs that have multiple pairs of booties and save yourself the hassle of reordering. Also, use caution if you have eczema or sensitive skin—repeated use can cause irritation.
Taking the time out of your day to use a foot peel can be great self care. When choosing which peel to use, look for one that incorporates aromatherapy and uses botanical extracts to moisturize and heal your skin.
