The Grapefruit Diet
, or the “Hollywood plan,” caught on in the 1930s among stars looking to get slim fast for the cameras. It involved eating only 800 to 1,000 calories a day (an adult woman needs at least 1,200) for 10 days. Of course, every meal contained grapefruit: half a grapefruit with two slices of bacon and two boiled or scrambled eggs for breakfast, half a grapefruit with any meat and a salad for lunch, and half a grapefruit with meat or fish and buttered vegetables for dinner. A “bedtime snack” of a glass of either low-fat milk or tomato juice was also permitted, lest you felt like passing out after a day filled predominantly with citrus. Getty Images
